Club Community Rugby Officer

Ballymoney Rugby Club’s CCRO Progress
Club Community Rugby officer is my full title and it's a wonderful opportunity for Ballymoney Rugby Club to develop and spread the love of rugby, writes Benjy Van Der Byl.
My role is to grow rugby in the club and local schools with the end result having more children playing the sport and increasing the numbers at the club, and once the club has these bigger numbers, we can provide the training and matches for all these players in different age groups.
I go into the primary and secondary schools in our area and I also work with the community groups like the Boys Brigade, Girls Brigade, Scouts and local small community groups. Rugby is a sport for all shapes and sizes and even if you have no previous experience in the sport, we help teach this through touch, tag and full contact rugby.
The Youth Section at the club is the fastest growing section in the club with over 120 primary schools boys and 100 secondary school male players , we also have over 120 girls in our youth section and that number was zero two years ago. So rugby is a growing sport in our community and the club has seen the need to help keep the growth in number and quality of the players coming through to feed into the adult game.
With that we need help from parents and volunteers to make all this work and there are so many people who can literally call Ballymoney RFC their second home. These people are very important to us as a Club. The Club has a vision to be one of the biggest and most vibrant in the north coast. We are heading in the right direction with the numbers at all sections of the club but need to try and give the children more plus more matches, high quality training sessions, better training facilities , and the list can go on. The club is working on all these areas.
I attend Ballymoney HS, St Conors (Kilrea), Ballycastle HS, Dalriada, Our Lady of Lourdes, and I hope to visit the primary schools in our locality when the Transfer test exams finish. So, there is loads of work to be done and I am so thankful that the Club has entrusted me with this responsibility.
We have looked at ways of trying to help the community and our rugby players at Ballymoney RFC. We have started a homework club on a Monday after school. This is a club where the children who finish school can come to after school and get a light snack and drink and a warm place to get some work done before training. This is to help parents and save them time and expense running back and forth to the club and also helps the children get their homework done, so when they get home they can eat and sleep. Stephanie McCrellis has been a great help with this aspect of the Club and has been a hit with both players and parents alike.
I will follow up with a further update post Christmas 2022.
